The Meta Ad Library is a free, public database of ads running on Facebook, Instagram and Meta’s other apps. To use it for competitor research, find your competitors’ ads, focus on the ones that have been running the longest (the clearest public sign they’re profitable), break them down into angle, offer, hook and format, then build your own original version to test.
Step 1: Open the Ad Library and search
Go to the Meta Ad Library, choose your country and ad category (usually “All ads”), and search by advertiser name or keyword.
Tip: search for your product category keywords, not just known brands, you’ll discover competitors you didn’t know about.
Step 2: Find the long-running winners
Each ad shows the date it started running. Advertisers rarely keep paying for ads that don’t work, so:
- Running for months → very likely profitable.
- Many active versions of the same concept → they’re scaling it.
- Launched this week → a new test; watch it, don’t copy it.
Step 3: Break each winner down
For every long-running ad, note:
| Element | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Angle | Price? Quality? Speed? Social proof? Problem/solution? |
| Offer | Discount, free shipping, bundle, free trial, guarantee? |
| Hook | What happens in the first line or first 3 seconds? |
| Format | Static, carousel, UGC video, demo, testimonial? |
| Landing page | Product page, quiz, lead form, WhatsApp? |
After 10 to 20 ads, patterns appear, and so do gaps: angles nobody in your category uses.
Step 4: Track changes over time
Check weekly. New ads, scaled concepts and price changes tell you what competitors are testing and how they react to the market.
Step 5: Turn insights into your own ads
- Pick one angle that’s clearly working in your category, or one gap nobody covers.
- Write it in your brand voice, with your offer.
- Use your own visuals, product shots, customers, demos.
- Run it as an A/B test against your current best ad.
Never copy competitors’ wording, prices, creative or trademarks, it’s risky, and it rarely works as well as an original take on the same insight.
Doing this at scale with Spotnxt
Manually tracking dozens of competitors gets slow. Spotnxt’s Competitive Intelligence shows competitor ads in your segment ranked by how long they keep running, with filters for angle, offer, hook, visual style and occasion, a copy library and a weekly “What changed” feed (new or scaled ads, price changes). It highlights opportunities scored against your own results, and “Make my version” turns a winning angle into an original, on-brand brief, images and a launch-ready A/B test, with your offer, never theirs. Google Competitors does the same for search, display and YouTube ads.
